                                       The Kingdom







                                               and the







                                      Old Testament












                         hus far in this study, most of the scriptural support defining and
                         illustrating the biblical concept of the kingdom of God has come
                  Tfrom the New Testament. The Old Testament also has much to say
                    about the kingdom of God.


                       The kingdom of God is the overarching theme of the Bible, and the
                    Bible is the story of redemption. God desires to bring all people into His
                    kingdom. However, because God’s kingdom is holy and people are sinful,
                    they are unable to enter. Through redemption, God makes sinful people
                    holy. He then ushers them into His kingdom as its willing, acceptable,
                    and useful subjects.


                       The  reign  of  God  as  presented  in  the  Old  Testament  provides  the
                    foundation for the gospel, which Jesus and the apostles preached in the
                    New Testament.


                       The phrase “kingdom of God” does not appear in the Old Testament.
                    The phrase the “kingdom of the LORD” does appear, but only once in
                    1 Chronicles 28:5. Nevertheless, the Old Testament speaks often of God’s
                    dominion  and  rule.  David  wrote  that  “dominion  belongs  to  the  Lord
