A History of the Church in Africa
It fills our souls with the love of God for lost humanity, and makes us
more willing to leave home, friends, and all to work in His vineyard.…
“Go ye into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.”
This command of Jesus can only be properly fulfilled when we have
obeyed that other command, “Tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem till
ye be endued with power from on high.” When we have tarried and
received that power, then, and then only are we fit to carry the gospel.
When the Holy Spirit comes into our hearts, the missionary spirit
comes with it; they are inseparable, as the missionary spirit is but one
of the fruits of the Holy Spirit. Carrying the gospel to hungry souls in
this and other lands is but a natural result of receiving the baptism in
the Holy Ghost. (quoted in McGee 1986, 45–46)

Some were given the gift of tongues and interpretation for use on the
mission field. McGee records the testimony of Jennie Glassey, who, in
1895, was given a supernatural gift of using Croo, a language used by the
people of Sierra Leone (2004, 46–47). Before long, most missionaries
learned that this type of language acquisition was not the norm. I
