The Nature of Ministry 77
13 How can the need for nurture become unbalanced?
People can demand so much of the leader’s time that he or she is unable to fulfill other needed tasks.
14 Why do people resist growth?
They are often more interested in comfortable, familiar places. Growth brings challenge that many prefer to
avoid.
15 How do your strengths connect with the spread of the gospel?

16 What areas of responsibility do you face that are most difficult for you?

17 Why do you believe Paul was given the title of apostle?
He was called apostle because he was commissioned by Christ and because he was sent to preach the gospel to
the Gentiles.
18 How is an Old Testament prophet different from the same title in the New Testament?
An Old Testament prophet’s ministry focused on foretelling events and calling the people of Israel to
repentance. This role often foretold of coming judgment. The New Testament prophet’s role was more of
encouragement and edification of the body through loving proclamation. While judgment may be occasionally
proclaimed, the New Testament message is one of grace and postponed judgment.
19 How does recognizing the assignment to equip others help keep each of these gifts in balance?
Sharing tasks both eases the minister from unnecessary burdens and also allows for the equipping of the body
to do the things they have been gifted to do.
20 Name an occasion where you have seen wisdom, knowledge, and discernment in evidence.

21 Why is pride such a risk for those God uses in these three gifts?
Others may see them as more spiritual or somehow possessing this gift. For example, someone who has been
used by the Spirit in gifts of healing may come to think of himself or herself as a healer.
22 How does prophecy differ from tongues and interpretation?
Prophecy is God’s communication to us in a known language. When one speaks in tongues, he or she speaks in
an unknown language, which must be interpreted for the hearers to understand.
23 Why does Paul require that all things be done in order?
The goal of these gifts is to communicate and not confuse. Personal gratification at the expense of the body is
unacceptable. Those who do not know God may be present and their understandings of God will be shaped by
such supernatural moments.
24 Which of the Romans 12 gifts do you find most evident in your own life?
Personal response
25 Why should a minister allow each individual to conclude where his or her gifts lie?
God will reveal the manner of His gifts to individuals as they genuinely pursue such understanding. Others can
only look on the outward appearance, but God speaks directly to a person’s heart.
26 Who has been a help to you in discovering your own gifts, and how did he or she help?
