Responses to Interactive Questions
UNIT 3
Some of these responses may include information that is supplemental to the IST. These questions are intended
to produce reflective thinking beyond the course content and your responses may vary from these examples.
1 How did secular leadership create the oppression Jesus came to relieve?
Jews of Jesus’ day knew the oppression of Roman domination. They also knew the religious superiority the
Pharisees exerted on them. In both cases, secular leadership brought oppression and little hope.
2 In what way does a minister’s rise to prominence often work against the call to servant leadership?
It often moves the minister further from the hands-on work of serving people. It can also put him or her in a
place where the focus is on serving the minister’s needs rather than his or her efforts to serve others.
3 In what ways did Jesus model servanthood?
He chose to leave the place of eternal exaltation in heaven. He became one of us, though we are significantly
inferior to His deserved glory. He sacrificed himself for our complete benefit. He submitted to the will of the
Father rather than demand what was fair for himself.
4 What steps will you take to establish a mentoring relationship?
Personal response
5 What have you learned from teaching others?
Personal response
6 How will you avoid becoming task-driven in your work of ministry?
This personal response should include maintaining a focus on people and not seeing one’s own abilities as
one’s creation—they are gifts God has given.
7 What are the key ingredients in determining a minister’s success?
First is love for those he or she serves. Jesus’ analogy of the shepherd also includes helping the sheep find
nourishment, maintain safety, and accomplish growth.
8 What did Jesus’ directive to Peter reveal about the nature of ministry?
The directive to “feed my lambs” showed the shepherd nature of the ministry. This analogy has much to say
about the commitment and self-sacrifice required of the minister.
9 What are the expectations of your ministry organization?
This personal response should include items of participation and financial responsibility.
10 What steps can you take to protect the quality time your family requires?
A minister must manage the expectations of people effectively. He or she cannot allow such requirements to
detract from key moments with his or her family. The minister must have a plan and follow-through with that
plan to keep the needs of his or her family cared for.
11 What is vision, and why is it required of a leader?
Vision is the ability to look ahead to a preferred future and the effort to motivate others to pursue that future. A
leader must help people see where they are headed and help them find ways to get there.
12 What relationships do you find most meaningful?
